Most quality knives when you buy them come with a razor sharp edge, but over time they lose that edge. A sharpening steel can rejuvinate that original sharp edge in an age old traditional way.

There is a skill to using a knife sharpening steel, that can be quite satisfying once you have mastered it. The knife should be tilted around 12% from flat against the knife steel and stroked from handle to point along the blade on both sides repeatedly until a sharp edge has returned. You should not run the steel across the blade at a 90% angle and you should not work on one area of the blade.
